Taking Game Physics to Web
The first upgrade of Director in four years, Adobe Director 11, was announced Tuesday at the company's headquarters in San Jose.
The multimedia authoring software, whose roots go back to the multimedia CD-ROM craze of the 90s, now sports a retooled interface, along with incorporation of Ageia PhysX for game physics and support for DirectX 3D graphics, Flash video, and Unicode (for international alphabets).
"It's not just for developers," said Rick Jones, senior product marketing manager for Director, at PC Magazine's New York offices, said of the first Director release since Adobe acquired Macromedia in 2005. "It's about 40 percent developers and 60 percent entry-level multimedia authoring."
Jones further separated the uses for Director down into three main groups: multimedia applications, e-learning, and games.
Director is a natural for multimedia applications like virtual architectural walkthroughs and virtual product demonstrations, Jones said, but the new version can also create hardware-accelerated 3D games. Game developer Allen Partridge demonstrated a realistic, fast-action motorcycle game and noted that Director was well-positioned to support the new phenomena of Casual Games and Serious Gaming, which require games to be completed in months rather than years, the norm for big-name game titles. ...
